The first 30 disaster relief tarps were delivered in October of 2011 and were very much appreciated by Americares Disaster relief agency.    These durable water resistant tarps were made from manufacturing waste acrylic awning fabric. The idea is that this durable long lasting fabric can provide shelter and covering for people and animals displaced by natural disasters such as the Haiti earthquake while also saving our landfills here in the U.S. Futureguard provided all the fabric from the cut off fabric saved and Awning Cleaning Inc of New Haven CT fabricated the tarps.  Awning cleaning has enough fabric for at least 30 more with lots more waste fabric on the way to them.  Hopefully t the other awning manufactures around the U.S. and even the world will begin to save fabric and make tarps for this worthwhile cause!

Awnings Cut Cooling Cost

PAMA's January news release, "Homeowners Add Environmentally Friendly 'Saving Energy' to New Year's Resolutions in 2012," was picked up by major news outlets across the U.S. including CBS Atlanta, FOX Carolina 21 and KCTV 5 in Kansas City. The estimated pick-ups reached 39,800 Google listings the day it was distributed. The release cites the interview with homeowner Barb Neuerman from the PAMA video"Awnings Save Illinois Homeowner Cooling Energy Costs," with an estimate on how she saved money by installing awnings on her home. The news coverage should help boost traffic to the PAMA website and links from the website to PAMA members through the shop locator. In addition, a new discussion about the release has been posted on the Awning Info LinkedIn group, which the general public can view. PAMA stands for "Professional Awning Manufacturer's Association".

Somfy's NEW Sunea RTS CMO motor is standard in the K300 for 2010!
The Sunea features a variable torque sensitive inner limit with back release. It assures the cover of a cassette awning closes every time by self adjusting for fabric stretch. The back release feature prevents excessive pulling on the fabric while the awning is closed.  It may be optionally added to the G250!

Awning Attachment Tip

Correct Bracket Attachment is Critical!

With all awnings, but big projections in particular, it is critical that a bracket is always mounted on each side of the arm shoulder within 16”. If your awning has less than two brackets per arm then you must mount one bracket between the arm and the end of the awning with the other bracket in the middle. Secondly the installers must make sure they get 2” to 3” of penetration into the center of the stud with the lags. Thick sheathing or vinyl siding can diminish this depth with the common 4” lags so longer lags may be needed in certain circumstances. Finally you need to be careful if you are mounting to the box framing between floors that you either go through into the floor joist ends or use half inch diameter lags for more bite.

Retractable awnings exposed to high salt environments often experience an elevated amount of corrosion which can cause the moving parts including the pitch adjustment mechanisms to bind or seize. This DOW CORNING ® 4 Electrical insulating compound will significantly reduce this problem when it's applied during the initial installation. It's a clear, easy to apply gel that is water and chemical resistant. Follow this link for more info and to get a sample.

Home shows are a great way to create awning awareness and demonstrate your professionalism.

Andrea Lampson of The Dorchester Awning Company say's their home show was a "'Big Success". "There were two other awning companies exhibiting there and people came back to us to schedule an appointment time and time again. Our booth and professional, low pressure approach made the difference!"

With people staying home much more due to the economy, comfortable home improvements like an awning to expand your indoor space to the outdoors is a logical choice.

Awnings Are Very Green

NuImage retractable awnings provide “Green” benefits in both the summer and winter seasons. In summer they can be extended to provide significant cooling by blocking solar heat gain both through the windows and while sitting under them. They will make an outdoor living space feel up to 20 degrees cooler. When used on windows they block solar gain as well as damaging UV rays. On new construction, incorporating awnings into the initial design can reduce the size and cost of the air condtioning systems needed for cooling. Please refer to this recent study demonstrating the “ “Green” benefits of awnings throughout the country.
