In summer they can be extended to provide significant cooling by blocking solar heat gain both through the windows and while sitting under them. They will make an outdoor living space feel up to 20 degrees cooler. When used on windows they block solar gain as well as damaging UV rays. On new construction, incorporating awnings into the initial design can reduce the size and cost of the air condtioning systems needed for cooling.
